...according to greek legend the olimpic games were started by Hercules,son of Zeus, in honour of his father. The first game about which we have information were held in 776 BC on a plain of olimpia. the games had taken place before this date but consisted mnainly of chariot races. Ancient greeks thought the games were so important,that they measured time by interval between them. A four years time period was refered as an Olimpiad. The games also represented greeks ideal of physical fitness and beauty, which they considered as important as the development of the mind. Nothing even the war was allowed to interfere the games. The games played every four years continiously more than 1000 years since they were abolish by the Romans in 394 ad.
In the end of nineteenth century, Frenchaman called Baron de Ca... decided to reestabilish the tradition. Followin his suggestion, 15 nations met an national congress in 1894. Two years ago the first modern olimpic games were held in Athens. And in 2004 the games will return to Greece, where Athens will once again play host to the greatest sports event in the world
